I am an Associate Professor with Habilitation at the Faculty of Economics, University of Coimbra, and a researcher at the Centre for Social Studies (CES). With a full academic background in Sociology from the same institution, I have dedicated over two decades to the study of international migration, ethnic relations, and identity.
Since 2024, I have served as the Scientific Director of the Observatório das Migrações (Migration Observatory), where I lead research and policy analysis on migration trends in Portugal and beyond.
My academic work focuses on both emigration from Portugal and immigration to the country, with particular attention to Cape Verdean, Ukrainian, and Brazilian communities. I have published extensively in national and international journals and contributed to several edited volumes on migration and mobility.
In addition to my university and research centre roles, I collaborate with a range of national and international institutions, including the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the European Migration Network (EMN). I am also an active member of research networks such as IMISCOE and the Council for European Studies.
Beyond research, I regularly write opinion pieces for the Portuguese newspaper Público and take part in public discussions on migration policy. My work bridges rigorous sociological analysis with a strong commitment to public engagement and policy relevance.
