Education is one of the most fundamental factors in reducing poverty and improving health, gender equality, peace and stability.

In recent years, access to education and basic literacy skills have improved significantly across the world, but there are still many challenges for the education sector – with more than 260 million children out of school, and hundreds of millions more not learning essential skills while in school.

SDG 4 description

There is no single and simple solution to improving access to education and learning. To achieve SDG 4, we need an approach that combines different components – looking at the institutions, processes and people who deliver, finance, support and regulate the teaching and learning processes.

The EU works in a wide range of countries, with very different starting points in terms of their education system performance and the challenges they face.

This month let’s have a closer look at some of the challenges in EU partner countries, and how the EU interventions help address them while strengthening education systems towards better learning, better access to schools and better management of the education sector.

Over the next four weeks, the Education Unit at DG DEVCO and Capacity4dev are proud to present a series of articles, videos and discussions on the subject. Our aim is to foster knowledge-sharing and collaboration among development colleagues and partners, creating a space for exchanging good practices, innovative solutions, methodologies, tools and resources.

We invite you to join the conversation, by sharing your experiences in the comments section of each article and on social media.
