Organizers: European Commissioner for the Environment Janez Potočnik and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Executive Director Achim Steiner.

Purpose of the event: In the margins of the New Environmentalism Summit organized by the European Commission, European Commissioner Janez Potočnik and UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner will be giving a press briefing which aims at explaining the relevance of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) from a Global and European perspective. UNEA is the first ever assembly of this kind, whose historical first meeting of Environment Ministers and Government representatives will take place in Nairobi from 23 to 27 June 2014.

UNEA – and its universal membership - has been designed to place environmental issues at the heart of the global agenda, as per UNCSD 2012 outcomes.

At the press briefing, UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner will highlight how UNEA will contribute to the post-2015 global development agenda and the ongoing formulation of a set of targets and indicators on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as the follow-up to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to be reached by 2015.

Commissioner Janez Potočnik will be presenting the European Commission Communication to contribute to the EU position for the international negotiations on SDGs that will be adopted on 2 June.

NOTE: You must be registered to the Green Week in order to have access to the briefing: see http://www.greenweek2014.eu/registration.html

Mr Steiner will be available for a few short one-on-one interviews directly after the event.
