Action Aid India: questioning the malpractices in redevelopment

“Why should I pay 2000 Rs towards maintenance when I have not occupied the tenement yet”, Rehana Shaikh asks the developer of Shivalik Venture redevelopment of Golibar, Mumbai. Rehana Shaikh is a resident of Golibar where a redevelopment scheme of Slum rehabilitation Authority (Slum redevelopment Project) is being implemented. Golibar is a slum in Khar western suburbs of Mumbai. It is a 10 year old rehabilitation scheme that has seen resistance from slum residents for malpractices. Currently the developers were asking for 2000 Rs towards maintenance from each slum dwellers while giving those keys to the tenement.
Rehana Shaikh, Farzana Shaikh, Zarina Sayyed, Nasreen Khan and Sarika Pimple residents of this redevelopment were angered that they we being asked to pay for maintenance even before they had occupied their tenements. They resisted and questioned following which they were given the keys without them shelling out extra amount.
They have been benefitted by Trainer of Training program organized under the EC PIE project. The session on housing and redevelopment made them aware of the scheme and they questioned the extra payment demand. Since then they have also been questioning the developer about open space and delay in the project.
