Barbados, Grenada named among destinations safest from natural disasters
Discussion details
Despite occasional threats of hurricanes, earthquakes and even tsunamis, Barbados and Grenada have been listed among the top 10 countries where tourists are least likely to find themselves victims of natural disasters, according to a report from Telegraph Travel. Barbados placed behind Qatar and Malta to rank third safest on the list with a 1.16 percent chance of visitors experiencing a natural disaster. Grenada placed behind Saudi Arabia to be named fifth safest with a 1.44 percent chance of trouble. Rounding off the top 10 list for safety were Iceland, Kiribati, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates and Sweden, the latter of which was said to have a 2.26 percent chance of a natural disaster. Destinations that made the top 10 safest list were deemed to be least at risk from floods, droughts, sea level rises, storms and earthquakes. The report revealed the countries that pose the highest and lowest risks of natural disasters based on data taken from the 2015 World Risk Report of the United Nations University for Environment and Human Security (UHU-EHS). As well as being calculated from past events, the ratings factor-in how well they’ve been dealt with in each listed country. A total of 173 countries were studied for the risk assessment, which also highlighted hotspot regions including Oceania, Southeast Asia, Central America and the Southern Sahel.
