The Climate Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) recently published a policy brief that details the success of the Barbadian solar water heater (SWH) industry. The Brief notes that the island nation of under 300, 000 'boasts more than 50, 000 SWH installations and saves over 100, 000 MWh of energy per year”' Renewable energy technologies are increasingly more important to Small Island Developing States (SIDS), such as Barbados and the wider Caribbean, as fossil fuel costs rise. The brief explores ways in which the Barbadian experience could inform efforts in other countries across the region. Among the factors that contributed to the country’s success are: The emergence of early pioneers, financial support and regulatory certainty from as early as the 1970s, and consumer acceptance buoyed by quality and effective marketing.
