Bridging Divides: Evidence-based Policies for Inequality Reduction and Sustainable Development : AFD and EU Announce Major Conference on Inequality
7–8 October 2025 | Paris, France
How can we ensure that social and environmental objectives are realistically reconciled in a just transition? How do we fund it ? These are the urgent questions that will take centre stage at the AFD-EU International Conference:
“Bridging Divides: Evidence-Based Policies for Inequality Reduction and Sustainable Development.”
Organised by the EU-AFD Research Facility on Inequalities (RFI) and its Extension, this high-level event will take place in Paris on 7–8 October 2025, hosted at the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) headquarters.
The conference will mark the culmination of nearly a decade of collaborative research and policy engagement under the RFI — an initiative supported by the European Commission since 2017. Over the years, the RFI has funded field-based research projects across Latin America, Africa, and Asia, building strong partnerships with partner countries, and informing both local and global strategies for tackling inequality. At a time of deepening global divides, climate urgency, and increasing demand for inclusive growth, the conference will offer a platform for decision-makers, researchers, and practitioners to reflect on the lessons learned and chart forward-looking solutions.
Day 1 – Political Dialogue at the Highest Level
The first day will focus on the institutional and political dimensions of inequality reduction and sustainable development. Featuring keynote speeches and high-level panels, it will bring together EU representatives, national governments, international organisations, and civil society to explore how just transition agendas can be translated into actionable policies and partnerships.
Day 2 – Call for Papers Now Open: Spotlight on Research and Innovation
The second day will be dedicated to academic and evidence-based discussions, showcasing both the outcomes of RFI-funded studies and new research selected through an open call for papers.
In the context of this call of proposals, we are pleased to invite submissions of research papers that offer insights into policies for reducing inequalities and fostering sustainable development. Topics may include, but are not limited to:
- Social and Fiscal Policies for Inequality Reduction in the Context of Green Transitions
- Sustainable Energy Transitions and Environmental Policies through an Inequality-Reduction Lens
- Equitable investment strategies and value-sharing mechanisms in sustainable development
- Innovative tools to address inequality
- Tackling climate change and its implications for intergenerational inequality
Selected papers will be presented during thematic sessions on Day 2.
🗓️ Submission deadline: 31 May 2025
