Call for papers on protection by local communities (Forced Migration Review)
Discussion details
Call for papers on the topic:
"Local communities: first and last providers of protection"
Deadline for submission of articles: Monday 16th May 2016
It has increasingly been recognised over recent decades that people are the main actors in their own protection. Local communities have great capacity for organising themselves in ways that help protect the community as a whole – before, during and after displacement – focusing not just on their own physical safety but also on access to the goods and services that are vital to their survival, and on the legal protection of their rights.
Greater awareness and understanding are needed of community-based protection strategies. Otherwise, the international community will struggle not just to avoid undermining these strategies but to actively incorporate community ‘agency’ into planning and policy, and to support community-led protection efforts.
This issue of FMR, to be published in September 2016, will focus specifically on community protection strategies and capacities in the context of forced migration. The FMR Editors are looking for submissions reflecting a diverse range of perspectives which provide analysis, recommendations and examples of good practice.
