Call for proposals for side events of the United Nations Environment Assembly 2 (UNEA-2)

Dear Sir/Madam,

As part of the preparations of the second session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-2), to be held in Nairobi from 23 to 27 May 2016, I have the honor to invite Member States, representatives from the Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEA’s), United Nations entities, observer organizations, Major Groups and Stakeholders in particular organizations duly accredited, and UNEP Regional Offices and Divisions to take part in a call for proposals for side events and parallel activities to be held during and the immediate days prior to UNEA-2.

The objective of organizing side events and parallel activities such as exhibitions and/or other cultural, scientific or educational activities for UNEA-2 is to provide optimal opportunities for diverse stakeholders to identify and address critical issues in accordance with the themes of UNEA-2: “Delivering on the environmental dimension of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” and “Healthy Environment, Healthy People”, which highlight the importance of ensuring environmental sustainability in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. The deliverables of these side events will contribute to supporting the role of UNEP in a new era of global sustainable development, which was launched following the unanimous adoption of the 2030 Agenda by the 193 Member States of the United Nations in September 2015.

The call for proposals will be officially launched on Thursday, 17 December 2015, and will remain open until Monday, 25 January 2016. The priority of selection is given to the proposals whose topics remain relevant to the overarching themes of UNEA-2 and the resolutions of the UN Environment Assembly and will demonstrate a multistakeholder character in their presentation as well as implementation. Submitted proposals will be screened and selected through several internal processes and committees, including a UNEP expert and the Senior Management of UNEP. The selection process is expected to conclude by the 15th of February, 2016.
