Discussion details

In response to recent reports on food security (third biennial report on implementing the EU's policy commitments) and on nutrition (third progress report on the nutrition action plan), on 26th November, the Council adopted conclusions on global food and nutrition security. The Council is extremely concerned that after decades of decline, global hunger has been on the rise for the last three years, with 821 million people suffering from hunger and malnutrition. The Council recalls the EU's and its member states' firm commitment to end hunger and all forms of malnutrition. In the attached conclusions, there are a number of recommendations to tackle mounting challenges and seize opportunities where the EU and its Member States can work even closer together to support sustainable rural livelihoods and ensure healthy diets. The Council also called for a revision of the EU's food and nutrition security policy framework in developing countries.
