Education in Global Gateway for the Green Transition
Discussion details

Societies and economies urgently face global challenges presented by climate change, loss of biodiversity and environmental degradation. Addressing these challenges requires new knowledge, skills and attitudes and education is at the heart of the solutions.
The Global Gateway strategy stands for sustainable and trusted connections that work for people and the planet. Access to quality education is essential for successful investments and job markets, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, as shown by a recent analytical report by the IMF (International Monetary Fund). Skills development, re-skilling and up-skilling, higher education and research, will ensure human resources to support Global Gateway investments, in a 360-degree approach.
The success of the green transition relies on education systems providing green competences and skills for all, in a life-long learning approach to mitigate impact and improve adaptation, while changing production patterns and greening economies. Education has a transformative impact and enables young people to drive sustainability and grasp jobs in the green transition.
The triple planetary crisis has a disproportionate impact on young generations who have contributed the least to it. There is increasing climate-induced displacement of school-aged children and learning is interrupted for 40 million children annually, affecting the most vulnerable, especially girls, not to mention the economic costs of lost learning.
By making sure that EU education investments align with a just green transition, the EU fosters resilience in education systems, combats climate change denial, promotes gender equality in green sectors, incorporates indigenous knowledge for contextualized solutions and promotes climate justice.
DG INTPA has prepared a Guidance Note with the aim of supporting staff in EU-Delegations and headquarters to ensure that:
-
EU education investments equip learners with competences and skills for a just green transition,
-
EU green investments are accompanied by learning components in a 360-degree approach,
-
EU supports education to be integrated into climate mitigation and adaptation actions and policy dialogue.
Webinars were held on 19th and 20th June to present this approach. Click here to access the recordings and the presentations of the speakers. Please note that this is only accessible to staff on the INTPA Academy.
