Sustainable Cocoa Programme 🇨🇮

The European Union is the world’s largest importer of cocoa. In Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana and Cameroon, cocoa farming is the main source of livelihoods for six to seven million farmers and contributes indirectly to the livelihoods of a further 40 to 50 million people. A large proportion of cocoa farmers in these countries live below the poverty line.

EU-FLEGT 🇨🇮

As part of a broad effort to halt deforestation and to increase forest cover to 20%, Côte d’Ivoire has taken a series of steps to improve governance of its forest sector. As part of these efforts, Côte d’Ivoire entered the process of negotiating a Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA) with the European Union in 2013. Since that time, formal negotiations have concluded and the agreement was signed on 19 February 2024 by Côte d’Ivoire and the EU.
