Following a meeting with the Algerian, Moroccan and Tunisian energy ministers, EU Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger said small pilot projects in North Africa would start bringing hundreds of MW of electricity to the European market in the next five years. He said it should be possible to monitor electricity imports to ensure these are from renewable sources, and said the amount of electricity imported would massively increase over the next several decades as large-scale projects, such as Desertec, move ahead.
