In the context of the EU Sustainable Cocoa Programme in Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana and Cameroon, the European Forest Institute (EFI) has produced a factsheet on the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), with a special focus on the cocoa sector. The EU Sustainable Cocoa Programme supports the three countries in achieving their objectives in terms of economic, environmental and social sustainability of cocoa production. Different versions of the factsheet were produced to adjust to the national contexts of Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana and Cameroon.

The EUDR was adopted with the aim to minimise the risk that products associated with deforestation enter the EU market and to increase the demand for deforestation-free products.

The EUDR requires companies to ensure that the cocoa and cocoa products they import into the EU are produced in a manner that does not contribute to deforestation. The factsheet provides a concise overview of the key provisions and obligations imposed on companies. In particular, it outlines the due diligence requirement, a key element of the regulation.

The factsheet aims to raise awareness among stakeholders, including cocoa producers, traders and exporters, about the significance of sustainable cocoa production and responsible sourcing. It also serves as a valuable resource for all actors in the supply chain to navigate the requirements of the EUDR and contribute to the global fight against deforestation.
