European Union Research and innovation for Food and Nutrition Security - Background conference report
Discussion details
Published as background document to the high level conference FOOD 2030: Research and Innovation for tomorrows' nutrition and food systems, this document sets out how EU Research and Innovation (R&I) policy contributes to the major global challenge of ensuring food and nutrition security (FNS). The report provides firstly an overview of the global issue and challenges for FNS and then develops a “thematic Research and Innovation narrative” built on four key Food and Nutrition Security priorities which can be supported also through R&I:
- NUTRITION for sustainable and healthy diets,
- CLIMATE smart and environmentally sustainable food systems,
- CIRCULARITY and resource efficiency of food systems,
- INNOVATION and empowerment of communities.
The report is a first step in the further development of a more coherent approach to European R&I which aims at mobilising resources and stakeholders to set out aligned R&I agendas in response to recent international political issues such as the SDGs implementation and the COP21 climate commitments.
