Preserving the architectural heritage of Alexandria is the subject of the cooperation between the Faculty of Fine Arts Alexandria, the Graduate Schools of Art of Aix-en-Provence and Avignon with Transverscité and the platform RAMI. This cooperation will take the form of a highlight event called FutureScape Alexandria that consists of two workshops from 18th to 30th April 2015, followed by a reflection seminar between the multidisciplinary teams coordinated by Transverscité on the 2nd and 3rd May. Visits, meetings and debates will allow the emergence of a reflection and an artistic production revolving around the city by means of the fictional motivational spring of anticipation.
FutureScape Alexandria will mobilise the students and teachers of the departments of architecture, painting, sculpture, decoration and restoration of the Faculty of Fine Arts Alexandria and will allow them to question the relationship with public space through a cross methodology and collective experimentation in the fields of conservation and restoration of heritage and video and multimedia creation.
Already in 2013, Walkscape Alexandria, a workshop about video creation/programming led by François Lejault (ESA Aix) had resulted in a first online map tracing the artistic experiments of students in the districts of Alexandria.
Along similar lines, the workshop led by Elise Alloin (ESA Avignon) under Walkscape Alexandria will deal with heritage conservation issues in the current context. The reflections and the work undertaken in the museum of the Faculty during this workshop will be boosted by various Egyptian collaborators, to address the issue of cultural property and their conservation in the museums of the city, at the Arts Centre of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and in the public space of the city.
FutureScape Alexandria addresses the concerns of civil society with regards to the destruction of the historical and architectural heritage of Alexandria, and the strengthening of an informal urban planning during the post revolutionary periods. Thus "Save Alex", an association led by a teacher at the Faculty of Architecture was established to raise awareness of the dangers that threaten the city. It works for the creation of an interactive map of the main places in danger.
