Global Report on food crises
Discussion details
On 5 May 2021, the Global Network against Food Crises will hold a high-level virtual event to release the latest figures on how many people are facing acute hunger and malnutrition in crisis prone countries, in a new edition of its annual report, the Global Report on Food Crises.
The event will provide an opportunity to:
- Hear from food security and nutrition experts about the latest acute food insecurity findings in countries with food crises; and
- Hear from high-level and senior panelists on the current measures to address food emergencies and those which should be adopted, how COVID-19 has affected food crises, and the role that resilient agri-food systems play in sustainable solutions to food crises.
All Global Network’s partners and interested parties are invited to attend the event.
The event will benefit from the high-level participation of Global Network’s key partners at executive level and keynote speakers, with the overall facilitation of Dr David Nabarro, Strategic advisor Food Systems Summit Dialogues.
An open Q&A session at the end of the event will allow participants to engage with panelists.

What is the Global Network Against Food Crises
The European Commission for International Partnerships (DG INTPA) and European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO), together with FAO and WFP are the co-founding and core steering members of the Global Network.
The Global Network Against Food Crises is an alliance of humanitarian and development actors united by the commitment to tackle the root causes of food crises and promote sustainable solutions through shared analysis and knowledge, strengthened coordination in evidence-based responses and collective efforts across the Humanitarian, Development and Peace (HDP) nexus.
European Union, FAO and WFP launched the Global Network Against Food Crises at the 2016 World Humanitarian Summit (WHS) to respond to the WHS’s call for new approaches to tackle protracted crises and recurrent disasters, reduce vulnerability, and manage risk, by bridging the divide between development and humanitarian partners.
The overall management and coordination of the Global Network’s structure is entrusted to a Senior Steering Group (SSG). The function of the SSG is to guide and endorse the Global Network’s overall strategy, monitor progress, ensure adequate funding, and act as ‘Ambassadors’ to raise the profile and effectiveness of the Global Network.
The SSG is assisted by a Technical Support Unit (TSU), which is hosted by FAO and jointly staffed by FAO and WFP experts. The TSU provides secretariat support to the SSG, supports and advises the SSG to ensure that Global Network strategic priorities are transformed into action.
