Coral reefs provide habitats that support fisheries, generate jobs through recreation and tourism, and protect coastlines from erosion. Yet research shows that human activities and climate change are putting corals at risk.
Against this backdrop, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has launched an interagency initiative to protect coral reefs off the shores of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
The new Caribbean Coral Reef Protection Group, comprising representatives from a number of federal and local agencies, was formed to coordinate efforts to protect coral reefs in a way that uses resources wisely, according to an EPA statement released this week.
