Interest for AgriTourism in Pele Island - Pacific Agritourism week
Discussion details
“Small is beautiful” is a popular cliché when economists are unimpressed with the chaos of large man-made things. For a tiny island like Pele, this is quite true; it is known and loved for its many natural features, so visitors keep coming back, year after year.Pele, nestled on a picturesque lagoon, is a sleeping beauty guarded by many other islands like an avatar world. Ten years ago it was almost too remote to think of it. Only poachers were attracted to it to tamper with its natural marine sanctuaries and almost depleted endangered turtles and dugongs, scaring away dolphins and whales that surfs its surrounding waters.
The colossal advent of ICT had given way to a better understanding of the Island and a faster transportation system, creating a tourism-income- hub for the 200 villagers who inhabit it. For the people of Pele, subsistence farm visits and participation is an added-value to the mainstream tourism activities of sun, fun, rum, reef snorkelling, surfs, dives and fish feeding. But the firebrand of agritourism had been lit before they knew it. With extra income to these subsistence farmers, it has attracted increased participation from its own youth. These youth plus the visitors are blogging, facebooking, and tweeting pictures of Pele’s activities to elevate a tiny island’s sustainable agri-tourism sector for years to come. No wonder Pele Island is all over the net!
