Jordan Economic Development Program
Discussion details
Jordan Economic Development Program
No country can prosper if economic development is centralized only in its capital city. For this reason, the USAID Jordan Economic Development Program has made a conscious effort to reach out to Jordan’s Governorates in order to ensure that all Jordanians have the opportunity to live prosperous lives. The Program’s efforts resulted in the creation of more than 13,105 jobs outside Amman.
The most significant results, however, were in the lives of those impacted. Through community-based and practical economic development initiatives, the Program focused on specific actions to impact at-risk areas. These actions varied from the promotion of low-water yield pomegranates as a cash crop; to the funding of a pomegranate juicing factory and dairy factories; to the initiation of three herbs projects; to the development of a satellite garment factory that now employs more than 250 women in an economically-disadvantaged area.
Economic Development Efforts Background in Jordan
Over the past decade, Jordan has made a tremendous commitment to economic reform and trade liberalization and has achieved strong economic growth. These achievements are the result of significant policy and institutional reforms that have freed markets, opened the country to trade and investment and privatized state-owned businesses.
