National Forestry Forum brings together forest-dependent communities and the Government of Liberia to improve benefit-sharing from logging
Discussion details
The National Forest Forum has commenced in Ganta, Nimba County, Liberia. The three-day event, from 10th to 12th November, is centred around the theme “forest resource benefit sustainable development’, and involves field visits to projects implemented through Liberia’s benefit-sharing system and discussions on the legal frameworks governing benefit-sharing. The conclusions will be presented at the next VPA Joint Implementation Committee between Liberia and the European Union, scheduled to take place later this month.
The event will be attended by members of the National Benefit Sharing Trust Board, the National Union of Community Forestry Development Committees, the National Union of Community Forest Management Bodies, local government, and representatives from the Delegation of the European Union and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
Since 2016 the FAO-EU FLEGT Programme has supported 14 projects in Liberia, amounting to over USD 1 000 000, primarily focusing on capacity building and institutional strengthening.
