Created 22 August 2012

The first ever Commission communication on social protection in international development was published today, outlining how future EU development policy should work to better protect the world's poorest people. Despite the recent growth in the world's economy, it has not been equal, and too often, the most vulnerable members of society (women, children, the disabled, and ethnic minorities) are left behind.

The new document, which sets out the future direction of EU work on social protection, is the result of a very broad consultation process which over 250 stakeholders and 17 Member states took part in.

The new proposals include supporting nationally-owned policies and programmes, introducing measures to support job creation and employment, bringing in the civil society and the private sector, and tackling the underlying causes of vulnerability – particularly those that affect women – to readdress the balance.
