I would appreciate to hear your opinion on the new EU legislation on SPS issues, food safety, animal health and welfare. I am in particular referring to imports and import requirements. What does this legislation mean for countries around the world exporting food and even live animals to Europe?

Dear Olaf,
Could you give references where the new EU legislation on SPS issues, food safety, animal health and welfare can be found? For those not continuously involved in and engaged with this it is hard to know what directives etc. you are talking about/which are new. Greetings, Anton
Dear Anton,
The regulations are as follows:
Regulation (EU) 2016/429 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 9 March 2016 on transmissible animal diseases and amending and repealing certain acts in the area of animal health (‘Animal Health Law’)

Regulation (EU) 2017/625 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 15 March 2017 on official controls and other official activities performed to ensure the application of food and feed law, rules on animal health and welfare, plant health and plant protection products, amending Regulations (EC)

I hope this helps. Both of these regulation must comply with the WTO SPS agreement (CODEX and OIE). There is also a new plant health legislation in place, but I have left that out here. Best regards, Olafur
