AFRICAN UNION NYERERE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME
FEMALE SCHOLARSHIP
To encourage the participation of young African female students at postgraduate level in Engineering and Applied Sciences, a Special Call of the Nyerere Scholarship only for Female Applicants was made in March 2014 and a total of 366 applications (202 Masters and 164 PhD) were received from 32 Member States.
Following Eligibility Checks, a Scholarship Selection Panel was convened to undertake the selection process. The Panel short-listed 24 Candidates to be considered for the Nyerere Scholarship award. (see the table in the attached document)
SCHOLARSHIP for Disabled students
To encourage the participation of young African students with physical disabilities, a Special Call only for Applicants with Physical Disabilities was made in January 2015 at Masters level in Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Engineering programmes. A total of 100 applications were received from 23 Member States. (see the table in the attached document).
Following Eligibility Checks, the selection of successful applicants was underway from 12th – 15th May 2015. Physicians’ statements of disability were verified by the AU Medical Services. The Selection Panel was intending to short-list 30 Masters Candidates.
Upcoming Calls
For the upcoming years, it is foreseen to provide annual scholarship for both female and disabled students. It will be useful to earmark fund for scholarship until graduation instead of yearly budget that expired by end of December. A certain number of annual scholarship (For example, fifty - 30 for female and 20 for disabled students shall be set for each year award.
