This week's EYD Story of the Week  Sustainable fishing catching on in Madagascar has been provided by the EU Delegation in Madagascar. Since 2011, the EU has contributed a total of 21 million euros to the Indian Ocean Commission programme to boost sustainable fishing though the SmartFish Programme. In Madagascar, SmartFish supports innovative methods using local materials in the mangroves. The fisheries agreement between the EU and Madagascar provides comprehensive cooperation in the field of fisheries governance. The EU support helps strengthen food security through Malagasy fisheries products. Financial support for the Malagasy fisheries sector boosts efforts to track and combat illegal fishing. The EU support provides a real opportunity to improve living conditions for the inhabitants of the fishing villages.
