Outstanding potential of the Informal Economy for Development: Considerations and recommendations from RNSF workshop in Lima

The RNSF project aims at studying IE phenomenon and developing best practices and successful experiences to support the action of sectorial operators such as government, CSO, and international organizations.

Informal economy is a large phenomenon in developing countries and can take multiple forms: in fact, IE concerns both marginal segments and entire sectors of the economy such as building and agriculture, where informality is sometimes the major forms of work.

Despite its negative image and frequent association to criminal word and tax evasion, IE is a source of livelihood for millions of people and represents an outstanding source of wealth. It is one of the most wide-spread form of work around the world and contributes to the growth of developing countries.

There is thereby a need to recognize the importance of the IE and implement actions aiming at supporting the informal workers and guaranteeing their rights.

In the video below, Paolo Carlini, RNSF team leader, presents how the RNSF project is working in this sense and the conclusions issued by the workshop held in Lima.

El proyecto RNSF tiene como objetivo estudiar el fenómeno de IE y desarrollar mejores prácticas y experiencias exitosas para respaldar la acción de operadores sectoriales como el gobierno, las OSC y las organizaciones internacionales.

La economía informal es un fenómeno importante en los países en desarrollo y puede tomar múltiples formas: de hecho, IE se refiere tanto a segmentos marginales como a sectores enteros de la economía, como la construcción y la agricultura, donde la informalidad a veces es la principal forma de trabajo.

A pesar de su imagen negativa y su asociación frecuente con la palabra criminal y la evasión fiscal, el IE es una fuente de sustento para millones de personas y representa una fuente excepcional de riqueza. Es una de las formas de trabajo más difundidas en todo el mundo y contribuye al crecimiento de los países en desarrollo.

Por lo tanto, existe la necesidad de reconocer la importancia del IE e implementar acciones destinadas a apoyar a los trabajadores informales y garantizar sus derechos.
