Project Aimed At Reviving Organic Agriculture To Be Launched
Discussion details
A Farm to Table approach will be used to promote agriculture as a viable career option and engage youth. A two year project aimed at reviving organic agriculture in the Saivou District of Ra will be launched in Rakiraki next week on Wednesday August 17 at Nabalabala Village. The project launch will be hosted by the Foundation for Rural Integrated Enterprises & Development. With this “Farm to Table” project FRIEND will work with six villages in the Saivou District to promote Agriculture as a viable career option. Farm to Table is about establishing systems where people can buy food directly from growers. Farmers benefit by being able to reap more profit from their goods then they can earn at the market, and consumers enjoy knowing how their food is grown and delivered to their tables. The focus on Organic Agriculture as the production method will also address climate change issues that sustain the health of soils, ecosystems and people. Project interventions revive traditional methods of farming, harvesting, and storing food to ensure supply of healthy meals even during extreme climate conditions. These traditional practices have sustained past generations before the advent of food processing, manufacturing, and trade in Fiji. The project will promote co-benefits including improved livelihood through value chain development and healthier food options. The Farm to Table Project is funded by UN Sustainable Development Fund and works through SPC to engage youth in Fiji and Vanuatu in Organic Farming. The launch will be officiated by Asif Chida, Inclusive Growth Team Leader and Private Sector Development Specialist with UNDP Pacific.
