Save The Children impact study: better skills, new approach to migration
Discussion details
The Regional Support Project for Migrant Children and Youth Workers in Côte d’Ivoire (PRAEJEM in French), funded by the European Union and implemented by Save the Children, aimed to promote social cohesion and livelihood enhancement for migrant children and young workers by setting up national and transnational coordination mechanisms. In this framework, nearly 4,000 migrant children and young workers had access to literacy services, apprenticeships with master craftsmen trainers and skills training in Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire and Mali.
More specifically, the action aimed at improving young migrants’ livelihoods through the acquisition of skills and employment opportunities thanks to the following 3 main activities:
1. Non-formal education (literacy course)
2. Learning a trade (for young people only)
3. Vocational / Qualifying Training (for young people only)
At the recent end of project activities, Save the Children conducted a study among a sample of more than 500 PRAEJEM beneficiaries to determine:
• The impact of literacy classes in the lives of young people at work
• The effects of literacy courses, apprenticeships, and skills training on migration decisions
The study revealed a positive impact of the PRAEJEM services provided to the target populations in terms of skills and competencies at work, including notable improvements in literacy and professional empowerment.
It also revealed a change in youth's approach to migration. In fact, during the implementation of the project, young people developed a more "reasoned" approach, where migration is still considered but based on more effective opportunities of work. In addition, most young people intend to complete vocational training and settle in their country.
