A training seminar on Greening National Development took place between 23-26 September 2019 in Asmara, Eritrea. This training was organised jointly by DEVCO (C2 and C6 units) and the EU Delegation to Eritrea under the Methodological Knowledge Sharing Support Programme (MKS) and with the support of the Environment & Climate Change Mainstreaming Facility and the SWITCH to Green Facility following a request from the Eritrean Ministry of Land, Water and Environment (MLWE).
The event was opened by the EU Ambassador to Eritrea and the Eritrean Minister of Land, Water and Environment. Fourty two participants attended. These included national partners representing different government institutions, involving the following Ministries: Land, Water and Environment, Energy and Mines, Education, Agriculture, Local Government, Marine Resources, Trade & Industry, and Health. The Forestry and Wildlife Authority also attended along with academic institutions and local authorities, amongst others. On the EU side, colleagues from delegations in Eritrea and Ethiopia took part.
The training explored opportunities and tools to better integrate environment and climate change in national development, as well as promote the transition to an inclusive green economy. The training modules were complemented by presentations from guest speakers from the Government and from the private sector in Eritrea. A field visit to a dairy farm that is applying principles of the green economy was organised.
The seminar generated great interest from participants, who took the opportunity to discuss challenges and opportunities for the green development of Eritrea across different sectors. They identified key linkages between the state of the environment, climate change and sector development, and discussed priority actions to make use of these opportunities. Participants discussed the importance of bringing the acquired knowledge back to their institutions and preparing an action plan to instrumentalise it. The presence of Eritrean authorities throughout the training is expected to greatly contribute to this. The fact that actors from various sectors were present greatly facilitated advancements in inter-institutional coordination that effective mainstreaming requires.
