Small Farmers, Big Business – Agriculture Value Chains Audio
Discussion details
The 9th edition of European Development Days 2015 (EDD2015) took place from 3-4th June at Tour & Taxi, Brussels. CTA, in partnership with GIZ, UNIDO, COLEACP and SNV hosted a lab session dedicated to Small Farmers Big Business (SFBB) on the theme of “value chains, value gains”. The SFBB Partnerships’ vision was explained: sustainable development must go hand in hand with the engagement of the private sector, with the aim to achieve food security in African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries. The session - ‘value chains for value gains’ - underlined the importance of an inclusive open-minded debate on how to overcome the complex challenges of domestic, regional and international markets. It was noted that a stronger collaboration between donors, developing countries and private sector is necessary to accelerate growth in agriculture and the food sector through building capacities of private entrepreneurs, commercial and smallholder farmers alike. Key speakers included Viwanou Gnassounou, Assistant Secretary General - ACP Secretariat, Jean-Pierre Halkin, Head of Unit for Rural Development, Food Security, Nutrition, Directorate-General for Development and Cooperation – EuropeAid and Apollo Owuor, Director for Agriculture and Corporate Affairs, Europe-Africa-Caribbean-Pacific Liaison Committee. The debate will be moderated by Isolina Boto, CTA Brussels' Manager.
