Created 28 November 2014

UNEP's Executive Director, Achim Steiner, congratulates the European Environment Bureau (EEB) on the occasion of its 40th anniversary in a two day high level conference in Brussels.

In a videomessage to the Module 2 – The next 40 years: placing sustainability at the heart of Europe’s policies, Mr Steiner commends the EEB for its 'significant influence on policymaking in Europe' and as a 'vehicle for mobilising public opinion and public engagement.'

Mr Steiner brings the discussions in Module 2 into an international perspective and names 3 areas of particular significance to illustrate where Europe stands today and "where it will hopefully provide both leadership and innovation for the next 4 decades":

1. the development agenda (relevance of the Sustainable Development Goals also for Europe)

2. Individual and collective response to Climate Change

3. EU's relationship with Africa
