For the 3rd consecutive year UNIDO will be joining the European Development Days, the most important European Forum on development and international cooperation. Under the theme of the European Year for Development (EYD2015) “Our world, our dignity, our future”, this 2-days event (3-4 June) attracts every year more than 6,000 participants from over 140 countries, representing 1,200 organizations from the development community.

On this occasion, UNIDO will be involved in the following panels:

Wednesday 3rd of June 2015 – 2.30-3.45pm

Pills, Pricing and Profitability

Access to medicines is often framed as an issue of price and distance. Price because the cost of medicines excludes millions of people from accessing them when they need them or causes financial catastrophe for people living in poverty. And distance because it is people in the most remote areas who suffer most from poor supply chains and the lack of qualified dispensing staff.

Local production of pharmaceutical products in developing countries appears as the natural response to other problems of access, like stock-outs and alignment to local epidemiological needs. But pharmaceutical companies in developing countries face many challenges in terms of quality, safety, and price competitiveness.

This session will debate approaches to making health, trade and industrial policies more coherent to achieve the double impact of access to medicines and pharmaceutical sector strengthening. An approach to enhancing inter-departmental coherence on the donor-side will also be presented.

Value chains for value gains – Engaging the private sector in sustainable agriculture and agribusiness

This Project-Lab aims to be both informative and interactive; with exchange and debate between thought leaders and practitioners on approaches for building sustainable and inclusive agribusiness models. There will be presentations from experienced practitioners followed by a fishbowl debate, designed to stimulate discussion and knowledge sharing. The Small Farmers Big Business (SFBB) partnership’s common vision is that sustainable development must go hand in hand with the engagement of the private sector, especially when it comes to achieving food and nutrition security in African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries. Different types of collaboration between donors, developing countries and the private sector are on the political agenda for development cooperation. The ultimate objective is to accelerate growth in the agricultural and food sector by raising the capacities of private entrepreneurs, including commercial and smallholder farmers, to meet the increasingly complex requirements of domestic, regional, and international markets. The workshop will therefore discuss the role that the private sector can play in agricultural value chain development.

You can learn more about the Small Farmers Big Business partnership on our website.

Panel co-organized by UNIDO and the SFBB partners, GIZ, COLEACP, SNV & CTA

Culture in the spotlight: Innovative approaches to sustainable development

Culture is both an enabler and driver of sustainable development, and yet culture is often seen as marginal to the development process, outside of the mainstream of economic, political and social policy debates. Culture treads a different path. Instead of solving social, economic and environmental problems through government or development agency interventions, arts and culture create the space for people to express opinions, explore issues and imagine alternative futures. Culture and development has been championed by UNESCO, the EU, and a consortium of arts organizations campaigning for culture in the post-2015 agenda, among others, and it must be included in an innovative, holistic approach to development. The challenges of integration, evidence and effectiveness will be debated, and a group of Pacific Island women will perform a short theatre piece showcasing their work against violence against women.
