This course is designed to provide learners with an overview of the critical concepts of climate finance as well as tangible best practices for scaling-up international climate finance to address mitigation and adaptation activities in developing countries.
Specifically, this course provides relevant background, practical knowledge and ‘how-to’ skills in order to:
- Understand the climate finance lifecycle, main actors and flow of climate finance through various channels
- Manage the planning, accessing, delivering and monitoring of climate finance at the national level
- Utilize policy and financial instruments in the public sector to mitigate risk, leverage and scale-up Climate Finance investment from the private sector
- Amplify developing country Climate Finance Readiness by identifying the national systems and capacities needed to effectively use Climate Finance, as well as the tools, mechanisms and modalities available to help with Climate Finance Readiness
This course is organized into 2 Modules. Module 1 offers an introduction and interpretation of climate finance and familiarizes participants with the landscape of climate finance. Module 2 reviews the risks and barriers to private investment in climate finance, and introduces critical concepts in accessing, operationalizing and managing climate finance from both the public and private sectors. Both modules provide a solid foundation in order to apply knowledge in planning monitoring and evaluation of climate finance.
Throughout the course, interactive exercises help participants to test their knowledge and understanding, as well as relate the content to their specific situation. Case studies, reference materials and other helpful resources are highlighted so as to strengthen the learning experience.
This course is unique in that it has been developed in partnership with some of the most relevant actors in the international climate finance arena, such as Climate Policy Initiative, the Climate Investment Funds, the Inter-American Development Bank, the United Nations Development Programme Climate Finance Options platform, and the UNFCCC Secretariat as well as experts throughout the World Bank.
Target Audience:
Senior and mid-level policy-makers and climate finance practitioners from public sector international organizations, private sectors and academic institutions. Especially helpful for practitioners who are involved in accessing, delivering, and monitoring/evaluating climate finance at the international, national and subnational level.
