European Commission and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
Event details
Description
This regional dialogue on cooperation in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) is organized in the context of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the European Commission (EC) andUnited Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and its new Annex for collaboration in 2021-2025. The EC-UNEP MoU Annex reflects respective policy priorities, including the European Green Deal and UNEP’s Medium-Term Strategy for 2022-2025 as well as its Programme of Work for 2022-2023, in view of the global environmental agenda. This regional dialogue contributes to the implementation of the new EC-UNEP MoU Annex, which enhances institutional cooperation towards sustainable development and poverty eradication through mainstreaming of the environment and climate into all policy areas at multiple levels as appropriate.
Objectives
Considering the COVID-19 pandemic, the triple environmental crisis – pollution, climate, and biodiversity – and the need to progress in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, this regional dialogue aims to:
1. Identify and agree on joint policy priorities in LAC;
2. Under these policy priorities, discuss lessons learned and expectations in terms of achievement;
3. Define possible actions to take these priorities forward.
Focus areas
Preparatory meetings and review of respective strategic documents informed the selection of three focus areas for joint discussion: (1) Biodiversity, (2) Climate Action, and (3) Pollution, Waste Management, and Circular Economy.
