Evidence informed policy-making - designing better food-systems policies

Today's food systems are not shaped in a way to produce food in an environmentally sustainable way and at the same time be able to provide sufficient, safe and nutritious food to a growing world population. A better use of research and knowledge in policy making and programme design is needed for a global transition to sustainable and inclusive food systems which provide healthy diets and better nutrition for everyone.

To address this challenge, GIZ recently commissioned the International Initiative for Impact Evaluation (3ie), with support from IMMANA, to develop an evidence gap map (EGM) which maps the literature relating food systems interventions to food security and nutrition outcomes in low- and middle-income countries.

An earlier EGM commissioned by FCDO, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, IFAD and AGRA assessed the evidence-base of the effects of agricultural innovation programmes on outcomes related to the productivity and sustainable growth of smallholder farming.

Together we will discuss the main findings of the latest EGM, the potential use of EGMs to inform food systems policy making and programming, and the implications of this effort for future policy and research needs.
