#GreeningEUcooperation: International Day for Biological Diversity
DG INTPA (F1 & F2) and DG NEAR
Event details
Description
22 May is the International Day of Biological Diversity.

Thirty years ago at the Rio Earth Summit, the text of the Convention on Biological Diversity was opened to signatures; 168 countries signed the international legal instrument for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity. The Convention urges parties to consider "the need to share costs and benefits between developed and developing countries”.
Long a global leader in supporting nature for better livelihoods in developing countries, the European Union has committed to double its external funding for biodiversity in 2021-27 compared to 2014-2020 and will particularly assist the most vulnerable countries. In 2021, EU International Partnerships convened a high-level group of experts to devise 8 actionable priorities for biodiversity. Their recommendations will steer future cooperation programmes at regional and national levels.
