Description
- On Monday the 25th April the Commission will host the first High-level Conference on responsible supply chain management in the garment sector, one day after the third anniversary of the Rana Plaza factory collapse in Bangladesh. The Conference will promote successful existing initiatives, including from Member States and industry, and provide a platform for continuing the dialogue at EU level. High-level participation by MEPs and from EU Member States, business and civil society is foreseen. Commissioner Mimica will open the conference and take the opportunity to present EU engagement on the issue. He will also give the floor to garment worker representatives. Commissioner Thyssen will close the conference jointly with the Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Lilianne Ploumen and the State Minister of Labour and Employment from Bangladesh, Mujibul Haque Chunnu, calling for stepping up joint engagement and collaboration on labour, human rights and environmental concerns in the supply chain in all garment-producing countries.

- The Conference will thus mark an important milestone towards a possible EU garment initiative. Discussions will focus on concrete proposals and possible options for stakeholders and at EU level to tackle key challenges in enhancing responsibility and transparency in the sector, particularly in those areas where there are identified gaps.
- The EU is committed to delivering the new sustainable development agenda that will deliver lasting chance to take us closer to the ultimate aim: a decent life for all.
