On 25 April, Commissioner Mimica wrote a blog post on this event in which he considers international efforts to develop a world free from hunger and undernutrition, aiming to achieve the new vision of the SDGs. He argues that innovative approaches to inclusive and sustainable agricultural development are crucial for achieving this vision, including open partnerships with civil society, the private sector and other initiatives, such as Scaling up Nutrition (SUN).

Four years ago, the EU pledged to support countries to reduce the number of stunted children under the age of five years by at least 7 million by 2025, with the EC announcing €3.5 billion of funding for the period 2014-2020 within the Action Plan on Nutrition. The first progress report for nutrition produced by the Commission has been recently finalised. It provides ‘a compelling account’ of how a clear, strategic focus can support a paradigm shift in the way that EU Delegations tackle undernutrition. EU funding for nutrition has risen for the second year running. In addition, 40 EUDs now have formal agreements with national governments to incorporate nutrition within their planning and programming frameworks.
