Description
Under the theme “AI and education: Preserving human agency in a world of automation”, the 2025 International Day of Education highlights the importance of education in navigating a rapidly evolving technological landscape. As AI and automation become increasingly prevalent, it’s vital to ensure that human agency remains central in decision-making processes.
Education is key to promoting sustainable development in this context. AI offers immense potential to tackle environmental challenges by improving data analysis, resource efficiency, and ecosystem monitoring. From optimising energy use to tracking carbon emissions, AI can support sustainability efforts.
However, reliance on AI must be balanced with human values and ethical considerations. While AI can provide valuable insights, it’s essential that we retain the capacity to make informed, context-driven decisions, especially in complex environmental situations. Education equips individuals with the knowledge to use AI responsibly, ensuring technology enhances rather than diminishes human judgement.
Additionally, the carbon footprint of AI itself is an important factor. As AI systems demand significant energy, it’s crucial that we focus on developing sustainable, energy-efficient solutions. Education can drive innovation in AI that supports environmental goals and reduces its environmental impact.
By fostering a deep understanding of AI, we can harness its potential for positive environmental change while keeping people and the planet at the centre of decision-making.
