Under the theme “AI and education: Preserving human agency in a world of automation”, the 2025 International Day of Education highlights the importance of education in navigating a rapidly evolving technological landscape. As AI and automation become increasingly prevalent, it’s vital to ensure that human agency remains central in decision-making processes.

Education is key to promoting sustainable development in this context. AI offers immense potential to tackle environmental challenges by improving data analysis, resource efficiency, and ecosystem monitoring. From optimising energy use to tracking carbon emissions, AI can support sustainability efforts.

However, reliance on AI must be balanced with human values and ethical considerations. Education equips individuals with the knowledge to use AI responsibly, ensuring technology enhances rather than diminishes human judgement.

Education can drive innovation in AI that supports environmental goals and reduces its environmental impact.
