International Day of Forests 2025 - Celebrating the role of forests in food systems
FAO
Event details
Description

Forests are vital to global food security and nutrition, supporting the livelihoods of millions of families worldwide. They offer essential foods such as fruits, seeds, roots, and wild meat, serving as fundamental resources for indigenous and rural communities.
Beyond providing food, forests are crucial for energy, supplying wood for cooking. They play a key role in agriculture by hosting pollinators, enriching soils, regulating climates, and conserving biodiversity. Additionally, forested watersheds supply freshwater to over 85% of the world's major cities. In times of crisis, forests become economic and food lifelines, contributing up to 20% of family income in rural areas and ensuring healthy diets.
However, these ecosystems are under threat. We lose 10 million hectares of forests annually due to deforestation, with approximately 70 million hectares affected by fires. Protecting and restoring our forests is urgent and necessary; the well-being of the planet and future generations depends on them.
Join the cause and support the theme of International Day of Forests 2025: "Forests and Food." The future of food begins in the forests!
