International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer | 16 September
Event details
Description
2025 Theme: From Science to Global Action
Forty years ago, nations came together to take the first step in protecting the ozone layer, guided by science, united in action. The Vienna Convention and Montreal Protocol became a landmark of multilateral success, and today the ozone layer is healing.
But scientists are sounding the alarm again: global temperatures are on track to surpass the 1.5°C limit with devastating consequences. Implementing the Kigali Amendment to phase down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), paired with energy-efficient cooling, could prevent up to 1°C of warming this century. Every fraction of a degree matters. Every action counts. The ozone treaties show what is possible when science drives global cooperation. Let’s carry that same spirit forward for climate action.
The ozone treaties are a shining example of how to turn science into global action, an inspiration for tackling today’s environmental challenges.
