Launch of the State of Ocean Governance in the Western Indian Ocean Region

Governance of the ocean, an irreplaceable source of food, jobs, and economic security, needs to be strengthened in order to protect its central role in human survival. In recognition of the critical role ocean governance can play in sustainable ocean conservation, management and use, the Nairobi Convention today released a new publication, The State of Ocean Governance in the Western Indian Ocean Region under its SAPPHIRE project and in collaboration with the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA).

The document is being released at a virtual meeting with the African Union, Regional Economic Communities relevant to the Western Indian Ocean region, national Focal Points of the Nairobi Convention, and other key stakeholders.

The document reviews the status and trends in ocean governance in the Western Indian Ocean region and identifies key gaps, challenges, and opportunities in relation to global norms and best practices. It will be a resource document for stakeholders in the region as they begin developing a strategy on ocean governance for the WIO, as such, a communications campaign is needed to ensure maximum attention, distribution, and use of the publication.
