Event details
Description
As part of the SwitchMed II activities, the European Union, UNEP, the Hariri Foundation for Sustainable Human Development, and the Ministry of Environment of Lebanon, are organising the first National Blue Economy Conference.
Set for May 2nd in Beirut, the conference will highlight the importance of ocean-related sectors in socioeconomic development while preserving marine ecosystems.
Blue ecosystems are vital for food, leisure, and climate regulation and coastal regions, which are home to 40% of the world's population, face urgent environmental challenges.
The Blue Economy seeks to balance economic growth with environmental preservation.
Objectives of the conference:
-
The conference aims to mainstream the Blue Economy nationally, presenting findings and policy recommendations.
-
It focuses on fisheries, coastal tourism, and port activities to foster circular, resilient growth.
-
Key stakeholders from public and private sectors will engage in dialogue and partnership building.
Local Engagement:
Emphasising coastal city roles and community involvement, the conference spotlights local initiatives, especially in Saida.
A validation process for Saida's local action plan on the Blue Economy will follow.
Note:
The conference is by invitation only for key stakeholders. Contact unep-westasia@un.org for inquiries.
