Preparing Political Parties for Kenya’s 2027 General Elections

On 7–8 October 2026, political parties and key electoral institutions will gather in Nairobi, Kenya, for a two-day WYDE Political Parties event focused on “Preparing Political Parties for the 2027 General Elections: Strengthening Compliance, Election Readiness and Democratic Participation.”

Designed and implemented by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) as part of the WYDE Political Parties project, led by the European Network of Political Foundations (ENoP) and funded by the European Union, the event will provide a platform for political parties and electoral stakeholders to identify priorities, responsibilities and practical steps towards credible, peaceful and inclusive elections in August 2027. 

With the next General Elections approaching, early preparation by political parties will be essential across multiple areas — from statutory compliance and internal party governance to candidate nominations, electoral integrity and responsible campaigning. The programme will therefore bring together political parties with key institutions involved in Kenya’s electoral and political party framework, including the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP), the Political Parties Liaison Committee (PPLC) and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). 

The first day will focus on strengthening political party preparedness and governance. Participants will examine statutory and regulatory requirements related to party governance, membership and financial reporting, while identifying priority compliance actions ahead of 2027. Discussions will also address coalition formation, internal party democracy, participatory decision-making, candidate selection and the management of internal disputes. 

A further focus will be placed on inter-party dialogue and peaceful political competition. Through exchanges facilitated by PPLC and a high-level dialogue on the challenges parties foresee ahead of the elections, participants will explore consensus-building, political tolerance, dispute prevention and lessons from previous electoral cycles. The discussions will provide an opportunity to identify preparedness gaps and areas where institutional and inter-party support can contribute to stronger electoral processes. 

On the second day, attention will turn to the electoral roadmap towards August 2027. Sessions led by IEBC will examine key milestones in the electoral cycle, candidate nomination procedures and regulations, party primaries, nomination disputes, election technology and the roles and responsibilities of political party agents. 

The programme will also address some of the challenges that can undermine public confidence in elections, including electoral violence, hate speech, misinformation and disinformation. Participants will discuss responsible political communication and campaigning and consider how political parties can contribute to a more peaceful and trustworthy electoral environment. 

A joint ORPP–PPLC–IEBC engagement will then explore how these institutions can coordinate information, guidance and support to political parties throughout the 2026–2027 electoral cycle. This institutional dialogue will help connect regulatory requirements and electoral preparations with the practical challenges political parties face as they prepare for nominations and elections. 

The two-day meeting will culminate in the presentation and adoption of a Political Parties’ Preparatory Roadmap towards the August 2027 General Elections. The roadmap will identify key priorities, actions, timelines and areas of responsibility, providing a framework for continued party preparedness over the months ahead. 

Through initiatives such as this, WYDE Political Parties supports stronger democratic institutions and political parties, while fostering dialogue, cooperation and inclusive participation within democratic processes.
