Event details
Description
The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia together with the Clima East project and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) jointly organised a Stakeholders Consultation Meeting on Georgia’s Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDC) in Tbilisi (Georgia) on 17 August 2015.
In December 2015, a global climate summit, the 21st Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC, COP21 – will be held in Paris, with the objective to achieve a new international agreement on climate change. Prior to this summit, all countries – Parties to the Climate Convention – are requested to elaborate their so called Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDC) to serve as a basis for the future climate agreement in Paris. The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of Georgia, in close cooperation with other relevant ministries, has already drafted its INDC, supported by various programmes and projects ongoing in Georgia. The objective of this meeting is to present and discuss the draft of this document with key stakeholders before its submission for official adoption by the Government.
The first session of the INDC consultation meeting focused on presenting the draft INDC and description of the process of its elaboration and further procedural steps to be undertaken before its approval by the Government. Energy and forestry sectors were presented in more preciselty to reflect their priority in Georgia’s climate policy. A moderated discussion followed, allowing questions, comments and views of the participants around the draft. The second session of the meeting focused on the challenges for future implementation of the INDC and intended support from ongoing donor programmes in this process, such as the USAID-supported EC LEDS project on the steps for finalization of a Low Emission Development Strategy and a German-funded INDC Support Programme implemented by GIZ. It also included Clima East project experts, their experiences in the region and their insights into the EU-Georgia Association Agreement implications for the INDC and its future implementation.
