UNESCO 2024 Global Education Meeting
Event details
Description
As the world continues to strive towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, the 2024 Global Education Meeting (GEM) stands out as a critical event for the international education community. Scheduled for 31 October - 1 November 2024 in the vibrant city of Fortaleza, Brazil, this meeting, organized by UNESCO and hosted by the Government of Brazil, aims to tackle the pressing issues of equity and inclusion in education.
Why Attend the 2024 GEM?
The 2024 GEM builds on the momentum of the Accelerating Progress Towards SDG4: Stocktake of Transformative Actions in Education meeting held at UNESCO Headquarters in June. It will be held back-to-back with the G20 Education Ministers’ Meeting, reflecting the Brazilian G20 presidency’s focus on placing equity and inclusion at the forefront of global education discussions.
Key Objectives
- Reviewing Progress: Take stock of country-level advancements towards Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4), with a special emphasis on showcasing transformative actions that have accelerated progress.
- Fostering Dialogue: Strengthen multilateral, cross-sectoral, and multi-stakeholder engagement to advance and transform education.
- Strategizing for the Future: Agree on strategies to boost investments in education and develop innovative financing instruments, aiming to fight inequalities and close the financing gap.
Why It Matters
With only six years remaining to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, progress towards SDG4 is severely off track. The global education crisis—marked by issues of equity and quality—continues to deepen, hindering education's transformative potential. The 2024 GEM will be a crucial moment for reaffirming international commitment and accelerating actions to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all.
This pivotal gathering will bring together governmental and non-state actors, educators, policymakers, and stakeholders from around the world. It’s an opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue, share best practices, and collaborate on innovative solutions to the most pressing educational challenges.
