The UNIDO Brussels Office is pleased to invite you to attend UNIDO's high-level webinar sessions in the context of the World Trade Organization's (WTO) Aid-for-Trade Stocktaking Event 2021.
- Session N° 3 "Mobilizing Resources to Build Resilient Local Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Industries in Developing Countries - Challenges and Opportunities", jointly organised by the Zambia Permanent Mission to the WTO and UNIDO, taking place Tuesday 23 March, 9.30 - 11.00 am (CET).
The session will look at the:
- Challenges hampering progression of the pharmaceutical industry in Africa;
- Opportunities for accelerated industrial development of the pharmaceutical sector to i.a. better prepare the continent for future pandemics and crises;
- Voluntary licensing and technology transfer as a means to increase access to innovative medicines and vaccines;
- Targeted official development assistance and other official flows to accelerate transformational change of the pharmaceutical sector;
- The role that the international pharmaceutical industry could play in supporting the development of the sector in Africa.
Finally, the panel will consider how international interest in pharmaceutical industry development in Africa can be harnessed to build and sustain momentum for the long-term benefit of all.
The panel comprises of high-level representatives from the German government, UNIDO, WAHO,
NAFDAC, the AfDB.

- Session N°17 "Implementing the AfCFTA: the Need for Deepening Private Sector Engagement and Commitment", co-hosted by the African Development Bank (AfDB), UNIDO, International Trade Centre (ITC), taking place Wednesday 24 March, 11.00 am - 12.30 pm (CET).
The session will reflect on: measures to promote the benefits of the AfCFTA among the private sector; suitable trade policies and regulations to make the AfCFTA work for the African business community; steps to increase intra-African trade, and will also explore ways to boost the participation of MSMEs, women and young entrepreneurs in the new single market to facilitate growth and enhance job creation.
The panel includes high-level representatives from AfDB, UNIDO, ITC, AfCFTA, EIB, government ministers, development partners, representatives of African Business organizations, as well as of African women and young entrepreneurs’ associations.
