Webinar: Social Protection and Migration: Theory, evidence and FAO’s approach in the Near East and North Africa
Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, FAO
Event details
Description
Agriculture can represent a huge opportunity for the creation of employment and for ensuring the achievement of food security for future generations. Urban markets are growing, from rural towns to larger cities, and strengthened rural-urban linkages hold many employment prospects both in rural and urban areas. However, the agricultural sector is yet to fully exploit its potential. In this context, migrants and safety nets recipients can be true agents of rural development.
The drivers and impacts of migration are intimately linked to FAO’s global goals of fighting hunger and achieving food security, reducing rural poverty and promoting the sustainable use of natural resources. FAO has a unique role to play in reducing rural migration, in view of its experience in supporting the creation of better conditions and resilient livelihoods in rural areas. In this webinar, using theory and evidence collected on migration, FAO’s regional strategy on migration will be presented, while the role of social protection will be explored.
