Event details
Description

Objectives of the course
The overall objective of this series of webinars on “European Green Deal - Greening EU cooperation” is to enhance participants’ knowledge and understanding of the European Green Deal and its implications for EU cooperation; and strengthen the capacity of the participants in “Greening EU cooperation” through integrating environment and climate change-related themes into all sectors and all instruments of EU international partnerships.
The specific objectives of this webinar on the Water-Energy Nexus are for participants to:
- Enhance their understanding of the interlinkages between Water and Energy for selected infrastructure projects (hydropower, green hydrogen and desalination) and help align them to the European Green Deal.
- Understand the environmental, climate, biodiversity and disaster risk reduction aspects of infrastructure projects that relate to hydropower, green hydrogen and desalination. Water is a means to both produce and store energy, while energy is needed to collect, pump, treat and transfer water for agriculture, industry and public water supply. Moreover, in a world of increasing shortage of freshwater, the desalination of seawater is considered a promising solution, but it requires serious amounts of energy. Increasing water and energy needs and changes in water availability due to climate change will have significant effects on energy systems and water resources. Energy and water-related activities thus need to be planned and assessed in combination. Focus of attention will be on the potential of energy and water projects to contribute to a green agenda, bearing in mind that present projects are often associated with serious negative impacts on environment (pollution) and ecosystems (biodiversity), the very systems that store, regulate, clean and transport water for energy and other uses. .
- Discuss the concrete steps and the key elements that should be examined and tools that can be used before taking decisions over the funding of these type of projects
Content
The webinar will cover:
- Green Deal: infrastructure, water, energy, environment, climate change, DRR.
- From “Doing no harm” to “do good”: the need for green objectives.
- General background of the Water-Energy nexus.
- For each of the three selected infrastructures (hydropower, green hydrogen and desalination), the webinar will examine:
- The “fundamentals”: basic technical explanation
- The benefits it can bring
- Present problematic issues, including potential solutions
- The future environmental, DRR and climate challenge
- What needs to be checked before approving the proposal, including tools that can be applied
- An example in practice
Target audience
Open to all EU staff working in EU Delegations or Headquarters. In particular, those who are not working in the environment and climate change sectors are encouraged to participate.
