Event details
Description
The United Nations declared 2025 as the International Year of Glaciers' Preservation, accompanied by the proclamation of the 21st March of each year as the World Day for Glaciers starting in 2025. This is an opportunity to raise global awareness about the critical role of glaciers, snow and ice in the climate system and the hydrological cycle, and the economic, social and environmental impacts of the impending changes in the Earth’s cryosphere.
Glaciers, often referred to as nature's frozen sentinels, are essential freshwater reservoirs supporting ecosystems, regulating sea levels, and providing water to billions. However, rising global temperatures are causing these icy giants to retreat at unprecedented rates, leading to water scarcity, rising sea levels, and increased natural disasters.
The World Day for Glaciers serves as a call to action for individuals, communities, and nations to recognize the urgency of preserving these critical components of our planet. It emphasizes the need for ambitious efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and implement adaptation strategies to safeguard glaciers for future generations.
Follow the official UN Event with UN News (21 March, 9:00-13:00, New York time). Join us in commemorating this day by participating in events, spreading awareness, and advocating for policies that protect our planet's glaciers. Together, we can ensure that these natural treasures continue to thrive, maintaining the delicate balance of our environment.
